Explore off the beaten track
Prepare for a weekend of hiking and biking where even your Fitbit will struggle to keep up.
Welcome to Central Otago, with its vast network of bike tracks and walking trails which are so off the beaten track, even your GPS might need a map…
Here adventure starts with great coffee and ends with a cold, craft beer and muddy socks. So, lace up your boots, pump up your tyres to explore a unique landscape where you might find yourself, but not too many others.
Matangi MTB - epic riding in the heart of Central with gnarly and technical trails on unapologetically raw and rocky land - expect the unexpected
Capture stunning photography of the landscapes from anywhere in Central Otago. For the best light plan to be out at dawn and dusk
Day One
Plan to leave the office early on Friday afternoon and get to Alexandra in time for a few hot laps at Matangi Station before beer o’clock. The mountain bike park is open from dawn to dusk, so with spring’s longer daylight hours it’s an ideal option to squeeze out every minute of ride time.
Grab a post ride beer and some loaded fries at Station Brewing to kick off the weekend in style.
Day Two
All rides begin - and end - with great coffee, so make sure to fuel up for a big day of riding.
For intermediate and advanced riders, Alexandra’s network of mountain bike trails at Flat Top Hill are amongst some of New Zealand’s best with spectacular views into the Roxburgh Gorge, or for a great day ride check out the Roxburgh Gorge Trail itself – NZ’s very own Grand Canyon.
There's nothing quite like great coffee and nourishing food to start the day, with plenty of cafes to choose from in Alexandra and Clyde
As the sun sets head to one of the local bars where you are sure to enjoy great company with your refreshments
Offering a network of trails from beginner to advanced, Flat Top Hill rewards your climb with views into the Roxburgh Gorge
The Roxburgh Gorge Trail has the added experience of a boat tour for the middle section, book in advance to enjoy this highlight
Day Three
Swap out the bike for your boots and hit the hiking trail.
If you’re feeling fit, then the Kānuka Track not far from Cromwell in Bendigo. This 10km / 5hour hike is one of the best in the region, but there are plenty of other hiking options to choose from and if you plan it properly, hikes can often end at a country pub or a winery!
Explore where the goldminers once worked with a wide range of walks available around Bendigo Historic Reserve
