We’re not called Central Otago for nothing. We are so central that you can arrive by road from any direction – north, south, east or west. You will travel through some dramatically different and jaw-droppingly beautiful landscapes whichever route you take.
Driving conditions are great most of the year, but winter weather can be extreme on some of our roads. Please stay aware, ask for advice and drive to the conditions. Being ice or snow bound can be the perfect excuse to relax beside a roaring wood fire and stay cosy while you wait for conditions to improve.
In rural areas many roads are unsealed gravel, so if your journey takes you down one – slow down and take extra care.
Christchurch is the nearest major international airport in the South Island, with Queenstown and Dunedin also taking international flights direct from Australia.
Queenstown airport is approximately 40 minutes drive from Cromwell and a one hour drive from Alexandra.
Dunedin Airport is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes drive time from Alexandra.
Bus & Coach Services
Central Otago is readily accessible by coach services from Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown and Wanaka. Further links available to Invercargill, the West Coast and beyond.
Smaller transport operators provide transport for our cycle trails along with door to door services between towns.
For an up to date transport schedule please contact our i-SITES on 03 262 7999 or via firstname.lastname@example.org.
Rental Cars & Campervans
There are several local car rental businesses in Central Otago, while major car and campervan rental company providers are located in Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown.
New Zealand has some restrictions on the use of rental vehicles on gravel roads, so be sure to check any limitations with your chosen rental company. It is also highly recommended to ensure you have adequate travel insurance.
Many small towns in Central Otago do not have petrol stations, make sure you fill your vehicle before visiting the more remote areas.
Road conditions are generally excellent with good quality, uncongested roads.
In winter, the weather is rarely extreme but our road conditions can change with frost, ice and snow so extra care is advised. Gravel roads exist in rural areas and some may be closed through the winter period.
For roading updates check the NZTA travel planner or download the 'The Central App' for their Report on Road Conditions.
