Bendigo Mine Loop

This is the shortest walk of 1.5 km, 45 minutes. Have a look at the Welshtown hut remains before continuing down through the Kanuka trees.
The track passes the first of many mine shafts: this one covered with netting. All of these are dangerous and may be very deep, so care should be taken over the whole area. The track continues down, passing a blacksmiths shop and more uncovered shafts to meet a cart track leading down to the Matilda Battery site. Have an explore around this lonely spot before returning up the cart track and continuing on it to the No 2 Shaft. This is a very deep covered shaft and is surrounded by mullock (spoil) heaps and building foundations. The view from here over the Clutha Valley to the Pisa Range and mountains to the north is spectacular. Follow the markers back up the hill to the car park.
